[WEEK9] Gregory Crewdson

Gregory Crewdson,
an American photographer who is best known for his very elaborately set up scenes of American homes and neighbourhoods.

Gregory Crewdson's photographs are usually taken place in small-town America at twilight.
The photographs he creates explore a psychological nature of humans which is often surreal, mysterious and disturbing.

In his works, he planned and staged every single of the details and lighting.
Sometimes, it takes 2-3 days just to set up the scenes.
He focused a lot on his subjects, especially the actor's position and expression.
He likes to give a purely physical instructions like "turn your head a little bit", "move one step in front"...etc.
What he wants from the actors are always something emptiness or less so that viewer can always project their own narrative onto his photographs.

Besides, Gregory Crewdson is really an expert in setting up lightings.
For examples, he used extra lighting to enhance the natural moment of twilight.
He also used artificial rain or dry ice to creates the effects that he wants.
All of this are creating up the mood bit by bit and tells a story.

Lastly, this is a short video I found about how Gregory Crewdson capture a movie frame.
It is really awesome and I would like to share it with all of you. Enjoy! :D

"I have always been fascinated by the poetic condition of twilight. By its transformative quality, its power of turning the ordinary into something magical and otherworldly. My wish is for the narrative in the pictures to work within that circumstance. It is that sense of in-between-ness that interests me"
- Gregory Crewdson
