[WEEK5] FAN HO

Today I would like to share with you guys a Hong Kong Street Photographer Master, Fan Ho.
Fan Ho has been shooting street photography since 1950s. His very first award that he received dates back to 1956, a couple years after he first started. Since then, he has won about 280 other awards from international exhibitions and competitions worldwide.

In 2012, Fan Ho was rated one of the most influential asian photographer by a website known as invisible photography Asia.

His most known publications "Hong Kong Yesterday" and "Living Theater" were heavily based on Hong Kong in the 1950s to 1960s time period.
From his photographs, I was mesmerised by the way Fan Ho has arranged the compositions in all of his shots. I feel that he has eyes that could perfectly capture each photo. Every subject, line, shadow, lights, tones and positions could all be vividly seen throughout Fan Ho's works, captured in the best way possible.
I am especially amazed when he uses shadows to create lines making it a part of the photograph as its merges together in one with the rest of the composition. It can be seen in Fan Ho's photographs that he is fascinated with geometric shapes and patterns as it is clearly visible in the photos that he has captured.
Whilst Fan Ho's photos lack in color, he makes up for it in a strong tones in each of his photos. The contrasts casted upon his photos leaves such a strong impact that it blow's the viewer's minds.

Form his photographs, the Hong Kong Memoir was revisited this lost era with a combination of never before seen images that introduces new-montage photographs.

The applications of new technical technology when using old photos was a surprising change that he was able to incorporate in his photos almost seamlessly giving it new life.

From these photos, the composition have evolved to giving a much stronger and rich feeling when the viewer looks at it. The overlapping of these two different photos creates something that feels surrealistic and realistic at the same time. Sort of like having two very different feelings jumbled together and from time to time, you get the feel to each. This new take on his photos really took me for a spin which I wasn't at all expecting. It definitely is refreshing to see him take such a step and trying out new things.
