His pictures that can be found in his projects are often detailed and illuminated with a focus point.
A sense of desolation and mysteriousness of the houses can be seen and felt from his works.
In his own works, it gives him the feeling of home, a sense of belonging somewhere.
In this Todd Hido's project, he makes the house the subject and the main focus in the photos.
Especially when he uses windows in his shots to enhance the existing colours that is shone through.
He is strong with his clever use of space.
From his photos, he often plays around with negative spaces to further emphasize on the subject.
Sometimes he does not only work with the exterior of the houses. Often he would also have shots of the interior. He would focus on certain object that has specific traits and characteristics.
For example, stains on mattresses, pillows and walls.
His photos are often imbued with feelings of sad, gloomy, lonely and lost which is general theme portrayed across his "House Hunting" series. Todd Hido is able to bring out these feelings through techniques like using colors, lines, perspectives, textures and space.
All these factors come together to make photos more dynamic and intriguing to the viewers.
It also sets us thinking about what could have happened right before the photo was taken.
There is also various other works from Todd Hido from his personal site, which seems to be rather hazy and blur. The mood and feelings of being lost and sad that was strongly portrayed in such photos really captivated me.
"I am very much influenced by my past. I was a student of Larry Sultan's about 15 years ago and he remained a good friend until he passed away last year. He was a clear influence on my work and I think that the most important thing that Larry taught me was to draw from within, to use your own history as the basis for your art." - Todd Hido
